ABOUT
Alexandru Schiopu
visual artist – photography, calligraphy, papier-mâché
I was born in 1960, in the village of Cioburciu, in the Republic of Moldova. I began my artistic education at the School of Arts in Chișinău, then continued my studies at the Faculty of Graphic Design in Minsk (Belarus), within the former USSR.
After graduation, I settled in Moscow, where I worked in applied graphics and social-political poster design. Returning to Moldova during the political and cultural changes of the 1990s, I became a lecturer at the Institute of Arts in Chișinău and contributed to the revitalization of the local art scene by coordinating the contemporary art magazine ART-hoc, as both designer and editor-in-chief.
At the same time, I exhibited aqua forte works in Japan and took part in several regional exhibitions.
Since 2000, I have been living in Bucharest, where I worked in advertising agencies before focusing my interest on editorial design, especially for books on cultural heritage and art albums.
Calligraphy and working with paper—particularly through papier-mâché—have become a distinct part of my artistic exploration, materialized in exhibitions such as Ink and Paper (Comana, 2019), Geneva (2019), Beaurecueil, France (2023), and DUAL-REAL (Școala de la Piscu, 2024).
My works aim to bring together the subtlety of handwriting and the expressiveness of natural materials, in a process that blends graphic precision with the poetic fragility of paper.
